Swedish Patent Attorneys Board – a new authority with the registrar's office at Bolagsverket

On 1 July 2010 the Government decided to establish a new authority – Swedish Patent Attorneys Board – which will manage the authorization and supervision of patent attorneys.

The new authority will be financed by fees and the registrar's office function will be situated at Bolagsverket in Sundsvall. The Chair of the new authority will be Karin Lindell, former Auditor General at the Swedish National Audit Office.

– We are expecting a great interest in the beginning when the existing authorization procedures – until now stipulated in private law – will be transferred to the new procedure. We are expecting 350-500 cases within the first year in business, says the Minister for Industry, Employment and Communications Maud Olofsson.

On 1 July 2010 the Government also adapted a new authorization procedure for patent attorneys pertaining to public law. The decision implies the introduction of authorization and obligation of secrecy for patent attorneys, enabling the Swedish patent attorneys to compete on the same conditions as for example Swedish lawyers or patent attorneys from other countries.
